This woman mourning on a crucifix is part of an imposing statue erected in tribute to a Hungarian man whose identity remains unknown but was likely a prominent figure, given that Kerepesi Cemetery has been the final resting place for Hungary's most distinguished individuals. The cemetery itself was established in 1847 just outside the heart of Budapest and covers an area of approximately fifty-six hectares or one hundred thirty-eight acres. Kerepesi Cemetery is home to numerous other tombs featuring beautiful memorial sculptures honoring Hungary's leading sculptors, painters, scientists, architects, writers, politicians, and other influential figures from the past. Many of the monuments have recently undergone restoration while others are overgrown with moss and ivy, making it a good idea to take your time strolling through the cemetery grounds to uncover some of its hidden treasures.
