The cemetery itself sits on 250,000 square meters of land and was first opened in 1866. It was designed by architect Carlo Maciachini, who lived from 1818 to 1899. The initial construction aimed to address both health concerns and urban planning needs due to the high number of burial sites within the city limits. Furthermore, the municipality sought to provide a representative location for the community that would unite the reverence for the dead. Inside its walls, Monumentale welcomes graves from various faiths and religions, including sections dedicated to non-Catholics and Jews. The cemetery is divided into three distinct areas: the central zone features tombs belonging to Catholic families and individuals, while those facing the main facade are reserved for Jewish people, and the section on the left caters to non-Catholics. From an architectural standpoint, it's possible to observe both Romanic and Gothic influences. Along the primary pathways, visitors can find maps that highlight notable landmarks, including the Famedio (Memorial Chapel), which is a prominent structure made of bricks and marble in Neo-medieval style and serves as the final resting place for Alessandro Manzoni among others.
