This piece was made by the artist through the use of a plaster cast moulded from real life. His muse was Apollonie Sabatier, a Parisian beauty at the time who also inspired Baudelaire in most of his work. The scandalous (at the time) sculpture, represents a woman contorting her body in pain. The snake who is biting her appears twisting around her wrist, holding her.
