This specimen measures approximately 11 mm in length including the stem of the striped seed from the wolf-willow (silverberry; Elaeagnus commutata). The wolf-willow is a shrub that thrives throughout the Edmonton region with small, inconspicuous fruit that perfectly blends in with its silvery leaves. However, beneath the outer mealy flesh lies a distinctive football-shaped seed featuring prominent yellow lines. Many indigenous communities have long employed the seeds of the wolf-willow as an essential material for crafting jewelry and adorning clothing (http://www.metismuseum.ca/resource.php/149052). To prepare these seeds for use, the outer flesh is carefully removed by either gently rubbing it off or soaking the entire fruit in water before drying to facilitate easy removal. Furthermore, soaking the seeds serves a dual purpose of softening them to prevent breakage during sewing (Barkwell 2009, Louis Riel Institute; Johnson et al 1995).
