This remarkable specimen is the shimmering fruit of the wolf-willow (silverberry; Elaeagnus commutata), boasting a unique appearance that belies its botanical characteristics. The stem-like structure actually comprises the persistent corolla, or petals, of the flower, measuring a mere 14mm in length when combined. The wolf-willows are shrubs renowned for their vibrant yellow and silvery flowers, which emit a sweet fragrance detectable from a distance. They are also known as silverberries due to their distinctive silvery leaves and fruits. These shrubs are widespread, frequently visible along the open slopes of the Edmonton river valley and in city parks. The fruit is not only edible but also rich in vitamins, fat, and protein, making it an excellent choice for raw consumption, cooking, or mixing with fat (Kuhnlein & Turner 1991). Although resembling a berry, this fruit is actually classified as a dry mealy drupe, a category that includes peaches, cherries, and plums. The wolf-willow's utility extends beyond its edible fruit, as it is also employed in reclamation projects to enhance soil quality and erosion control.
