The origins of the modern witch hat are hotly debated among historians. One theory suggests that it dates back to ancient times, specifically to the mummified remains found in Subeshi, where women wore tall, pointed black hats similar to those worn by their European counterparts during the Middle Ages. These ancient relics, dating between 400 and 200 BCE, were discovered in a deep gorge near the city of Turfan, an important settlement at that time. Another theory is that the image of the witch hat arose from anti-Semitic attitudes: in 1215, the Fourth Council of the Lateran issued a decree requiring all Jews to wear distinctive headgear, specifically a pointed cap known as a Judenhat.
