Discussing a Maya modeling technique for converting wireframe mesh edges into solid volumes, the process is explained in detail on my mel wiki (http://tinyurl.com/a7abytf). Using a simple polygonal cylinder, deformations like lattice and nonlinear bend were applied, and the results are showcased on my blog (http://www.akeric.com/blog/?p=1917). The print was done using Makerware in 'natural' PLA, with settings of 230 degrees for extruder temperature, no HPB, 10% infill, 1 shell, and a layer height of .27. It took approximately 2 hours and 49 minutes to print, resulting in a size of 3 1/4" across and about 4 1/2" tall. While the print came out well, some support material might be necessary due to horizontal edges with slightly changing elevations; post-print cleanup was required to remove loose filament hanging down.
