A wine glass is designed to drink and savor wine. The influence of glass shape on wine taste remains debated as no scientific study has proven it. Some believe the shape focuses flavor and aroma for a better varietal experience, but this may be due to misconceptions about taste buds placement. Wine glasses are typically stemware, with three parts: bowl, stem, and foot. They come in various shapes like narrower openings that concentrate aromas or conical designs. Stemless wine glasses, or tumblers, are also available but lack the benefits of using stemmed ones. Red wine glasses have rounder, wider bowls to increase oxidation rate, while white wine glasses vary from champagne flutes with small mouths to preserve freshness. Champagne flutes have a long stem and tall, narrow bowl to retain carbonation and enhance visual appeal. Other glasses like sherry or schooners, copitas, and boccalinos serve specific drinks or regions. To maintain wine temperature, holding the glass by the stem is recommended. In the 18th century, spiral patterns in the stem were used to decorate glasses, with air bubbles creating a airtwist and threads forming opaque twist designs.
