13th Jan 2019 - New Version Now Available! Thing 3353329. The latest version works seamlessly with both screw and cork wine bottles, offering improved drainage and reduced need for supports. There are numerous designs for bottle-based bird feeders out there, but most rely on plastic soda or coke-style bottles. I sought something more refined and designed my own concept specifically for screw-top wine bottles. Most screw tops are based on the Stelvin wine closure, featuring an M30 thread. The M30 produced by Fusion 360 fits perfectly. The design consists of a feeder part together with a top section. One top section has holes not parallel to the bottom. These two parts are meant to be connected using paracord or tent guy-rope cord. The other top section features holes aligned with the bottom, allowing for easy joining with threaded rod. The holes measure 6mm. To avoid the hassle of pouring bird seed into a wine bottle opening, I've included a screw-on funnel. This may seem like overkill, but our regular funnels wouldn't allow the seed to flow properly. The final STL of the feeder section differs slightly from the other images – I removed a domed section intended to spread the seed but ended up causing jams. I also increased the areas joining the threaded section to the base. Print Settings Printer: Wanhao Duplicator 6 Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: .2 Infill: 20 - 30% Notes: Feeder section: 30% infill, no supports. 3 shells and top/bottom layers are used. 1mm drainage holes are included but may require opening depending on the printer's accuracy. A Dremel or small drill would work fine, or possibly a heated needle. Top section: 20% infill. Supports from print bed for the hole 'wings' only. Funnel settings aren't crucial, but supports will be needed from the print bed to the top of the threaded area – 3 shells and top/bottom layers are used. I printed in HTPLA (which looks quite cool with a silver finish), but ABS or PETG would also work. I'm not sure how standard PLA would hold up outdoors for an extended period.
