I Built a Simple Cooling Fan Mount for My Windows Surface Pro 3. To keep my device running smoothly, I decided to add a 12-volt cooling fan that hooks up to an old USB cable. It's working perfectly now; the built-in fan no longer kicks in because the external fan does its job so well, and it stays cool even during heavy use with 30°C air temperature. My 12-volt fan uses only 5V x 0.04A = 0.2W of power, which is negligible.
