I crafted a skylight/roof hatch for my shed, and the lock refused to sit flat because one part was anchored to a moulding. Individual washers can work as substitutes but they are not particularly user-friendly. Each screw necessitates several, which can easily fall off during installation. A custom shim plate proved to be the ideal solution.
