Here's my fifth version of my wind-up boat, which I'm really excited to share with you. After getting a ton of feedback on Facebook after the fourth version, I made some big changes to make this one even better. The most noticeable change is the larger wind-up wheel, which makes it easy to turn even when your hands are wet. I also thickened up the button so it's easier to grip. I rounded off all the sharp edges on the components and even moved the screws so their heads are facing upwards. No more sharp threads on top! The rudder is now rigid, which means the boat doesn't drift to one side anymore - it works amazingly well! The biggest changes were in the transmission. I completely redesigned the gears, using a spiral bevel gear for the direction change in the back. This produces almost no friction and works really well in the water! The gears also have counter bearings now, which prevents tilting and reduces friction. With version 5, you'll only need four different screw sizes: M3x10, M3x20, M3x30, and M3x40. You'll also need some M3 Nyloc nuts and normal nuts or alternative Nylocs. To make sure your print settings are correct, I created a small functional benchmark that includes the most important gears - the bevel gears - and a small holder with a pin. Assemble it and test it to see if the two gears mesh easily. Adjust your first layer and extrusion multiplier accordingly and then print the rest of the model using the same settings. It's super important that these two gears run smoothly, so start with the benchmark and work from there. And please print everything in PLA - otherwise, the spiral will be too soft and generate too much friction. I want to give a huge shoutout to Janssen86 for creating the gear library on Thingiverse using OPEN SCAD. I designed this whole boat with Fusion 360, but designing a spiral bevel gearbox was way more difficult than I expected - thanks to Janssen's library, it wouldn't have been possible without him! Happy printing! The square is now 1mm longer to transmit more torque. Edit (04/12/2020): I added the file "easySchraube" for easier printing. It might be less efficient, but it's worth trying!
