Customizable Wind Turbine System: Insert "insideRFP" into Wind Turbine During Printing to Optimize Energy Output The wind turbine is designed to be printed with the "insideRFP" inserted, allowing for a small amount of energy to be generated using a DC motor. One wind turbine blade has been created, and multiple blades can be added with holes to fit the "insideRFP" for testing different variables' effects on electricity output. Print Settings: Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer Model: MakerBot Replicator (5th Generation) Rafts: Yes Supports: Yes Notes: Sandpaper is recommended for removing leftover supports from the wind turbine blade. Design Process: Files from a YouTube video were used and modified to fit on a DC motor. The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n87iA3YuFc. Standards: NGSS CCSS Background and Overview: This project was completed in 8th grade as extra credit. It can be taken to the next level or kept simple, depending on the user's preference. Lesson Plan and Activity: Build this wind turbine with the class. Show a pre-built example and demonstrate how it works. Materials Needed: PVC pipe for the base DC motor Wires Soldering machine Ammeter or current-measuring device Optional: small LED light Build Time: Approximately 3 hours. Skills Learned: Building Wiring Electricity Motors Duration of Lesson: 30 minutes.
