William Wallace is known as the “Guardian of Scotland.” As the leader of the Scottish resistance against English rule, Wallace spent most of his life battling with English forces for Scottish independence. His takeover of Stirling Castle is considered by many historians to be the first major victory for the Scottish resistance. This piece was commissioned by an American descendant, William Wallace Spence, who was proud of his hertiage and considered him a “champion of freedom whose memory not only Scotland, but all the world should honor.” The statue itself is cast in bronze, a replica of the famous William Wallace statue that stands on Abbey Craig in Scotland made in 1881. You can find this statue towering over Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, MD. D. W. Stevenson, 1893, Bronze, 16 ft × 6 ft × 4 ft (4.9 m × 1.8 m × 1.2 m) Baltimore Heritage
