This marble statue of Wilhelm Tell was crafted by French sculptor Marius Jean Antonin Mercié (Toulouse 1845 - Paris 1916). The Swiss folk hero Wilhelm Tell lived in the Canton of Uri in the early 14th century and again in 1902. Daniel Illfa Osiris (1828-1907), patron of Paris and an officer of the Legion of Honor, donated this statue to the City of Lausanne as a tribute to the home for soldiers of the army of Bourbaki interned in Switzerland in 1871.
