William Rathbone, a philanthropist with a lasting legacy, earned the distinction of being an honorary freeman of Liverpool. As a dedicated public servant, he represented Liverpool in Parliament from 1869 to 1880, tirelessly advocating for the city's interests. For thirty-five years, Rathbone served as a guardian of the poor, providing vital support to those in need. His commitment to education led him to co-found both the University of Liverpool and the University of Wales. In addition, he established a pioneering training school for nurses, bringing much-needed care directly into the homes of Liverpool's impoverished and suffering residents. This groundbreaking initiative would eventually spread nationwide. The citizens of Liverpool proudly commissioned a sculpture in his honor.
