Thew had a successful 25-year career. Its voyage ended abruptly when it was struck by the 545-foot freighter William Livingston in a thick fog just off Thunder Bay Island. The Livingston did not stop after the collision, leaving the Thew to sink quickly without loss of life. Today, its remains lie scattered on the ocean floor with all machinery and deck equipment intact at the site.
