William Morris - Red House Photogrammetry

William Morris - Red House Photogrammetry

My first experiment with photoscanning a landmark structure. The Red House is a distinctive edifice designed and inhabited by William Morris. I snapped about 120 photographs, realizing too late that this was woefully inadequate; ideally, I would have taken at least double that number. Furthermore, having access to a drone would have greatly enhanced my ability to capture images of the roof from elevated angles rather than being limited to ground-level shots alone. The intricate mesh of the brickwork turned out remarkably well, but the photogrammetry software struggled with the surrounding foliage, particularly at the base of the structure. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate; the sun kept breaking through the clouds, creating an inconsistent mix of light and shadows that made it challenging for the photogrammetry software to identify target points in each image. As a result, it was unable to generate a complete 3D model of the building. I envision returning during winter on an overcast day when the foliage will be dormant, allowing me to capture better images of the brickwork below.
