William Cullen Bryant was a renowned American romantic poet, journalist, and respected long-time editor of the New York Evening Post. His most celebrated poem, "Thanatopsis," showcases his exceptional writing skills, which he may have been honing as early as 1811. In 1817, Bryant's father discreetly gathered some pages of verse from his son's desk, and with the encouragement of Willard Phillips, a prominent editor of the North American Review who had previously studied classical literature under Dr. Bryant's guidance, they submitted them alongside their own work for publication.
