William B. Dick Grave Monument
thingiverse
I'm going to Sioux Falls, SD where the oldest cemetery has this grave marker honoring William B. Dick, a courageous Civil War Veteran. I discovered at first glance that he was a veteran because of the iron flag holder bearing the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) insignia standing guard in front of it. The inscription on his tombstone is legible, but requires close inspection to decipher due to its faded appearance. Its east-facing position where strong winds originating from the surrounding prairies can buffet against the area is also noteworthy. With my trusty Nikon D3100 in hand, I took nearly 40 photographs set to RAW and shot in Aperture Mode. I adjusted the ISO setting to a modest 100 to ensure clarity, which yielded high-quality images that required minimal editing intervention. Using Adobe Lightroom, I tweaked the photos by subtly increasing their sharpness and fine-tuning their overall visual fidelity before exporting them as 16-bit TIFs. I then imported these files into Agisoft Photoscan and employed the 'ultra' settings to meticulously recreate William B. Dick's historic monument. Following this procedure, I ran the resulting OBJ file through Meshmixer to smooth out imperfections and rectify a few gaping holes, including some protruding fragments around its base, where uneven ground resulted in a slightly tilted presentation. Lastly, I transferred the optimized OBJ file into Meshlab where I exported it as STL and PLY files for easy sharing purposes. The bulky nature of the original OBJ file meant it was impossible to post here; no matter what level of detail I attempted to eliminate by applying mesh reduction techniques or decimation methods to condense its size, I always found the result lacking the required depth and finesse to warrant sharing publicly.
