The Iberian ibex, also known as the Spanish ibex or wild goat, is a species with four subspecies. Two of these can still be found on the Iberian Peninsula, but two others are now extinct. The Portuguese subspecies went extinct in 1892 and the Pyrenean subspecies followed suit in 2000. A cloning project was undertaken to revive the Pyrenean subspecies, resulting in one live birth in July 2003. This was a historic moment, marking the first time a taxon had been brought back from extinction. Unfortunately, the clone died shortly after birth due to physical defects.
