Deer encompass two principal subgroups: the Cervinae and the Capreolinae. Cervinae encompasses a wide range of species such as muntjacs, wapitis, fallow deer, and chital; while the Capreolinae subgroup includes reindeer or caribou, roe deer, and moose. The key characteristic distinguishing female reindeer and all male deer except the Chinese water deer is their growth and shedding of new antlers each year - a trait that separates them from permanently horned antelopes belonging to a distinct family, Bovidae, within the Artiodactyla order. In contrast, the Asian musk deer (Moschidae) and chevrotains found in tropical African and Asian forests belong to their own respective families under the ruminant clade (Ruminantia), sharing little more familial bond with deer than do other members of the even-toed ungulate class (Artiodactyla). The history of art bears witness to the inclusion of deer imagery since Paleolithic cave paintings. Moreover, these magnificent creatures have left a significant imprint in the realm of mythology and literature throughout the ages, influencing heraldry. From providing succulent venison to their meaty contribution, strong buckskin extracted from their hides, and the durability and strength their antlers lend to knife handles - deer contribute valuable resources which human society has sought since the Middle Ages and continues to exploit even today.
