Wideford Hill Chambered Cairn stands as a Neolithic tomb situated atop an artificial terrace on Mainland's western side, Orkney. Classified under the 'Maeshowe Group', this communal burial site dates back to the Neolithic era. George Petrie excavated it in 1849, while Kilbride-Jones further explored the site in 1935, uncovering a long entrance passage leading to a central corbelled chamber and three side cells. The interior was deliberately filled with rubble before history, but human burial can be inferred through comparison with other chambered cairns. Wideford Hill Chambered Cairn boasts examples of Neolithic art etched into its stonework. Today, visitors can access the chamber through a modern hatch and ladder in the roof. The site is managed by HES, offering free public access. For information on visiting, check out their website. Learn more about Wideford Hill's history within the HES Archives.
