Whitworth quick return mechanism
thingiverse
This is a speedy turnaround system devised by Whitworth in the 1850s, converting cyclical motion into swift returns with the downstroke racing ahead of the upstroke. https://youtu.be/CCfre2TgeTk https://youtu.be/ixjWLL1au18 For this design, I've cleverly incorporated a compact gear motor and secured it firmly in place using two 1.6mm screws - a far superior approach to relying on traditional brackets. The Conrod is held steady by a robust 3mm bolt and a precision small bearing with an outer diameter of 10mm. The main wheel could potentially benefit from some strategically placed weight offset to counterbalance the conrod pivot, ensuring smoother operation. The Whitworth speedy turnaround system transforms rotary motion into rapid reciprocating motion, but unlike the crank and slider, the forward reciprocal motion is surprisingly slower than the return stroke - hence its name: speedy turnaround mechanism.
