White Rot

White Rot

sketchfab

This ancient valley oak is hundreds of years old, its massive trunk hollowed out by termites and white rot that thrives alongside oaks. The unique tubular structure of the tree makes it lighter and stronger than solid trunks, often reaching heights of over a hundred feet. Squirrels and birds make good use of the hollows, while the trees themselves eventually break down, usually due to drought-induced stress. Although white rot is always present, it's ultimately the cause of the tree's demise. A peculiar fungus, yet to be identified, produces shelf-like fruiting bodies with spore-bearing filaments that play a significant role in the tree's decay process.
