The Whitby Stone Company burst onto the scene in 1832, courtesy of visionary businessmen hailing from Whitby itself who were also instrumental in establishing the horse-drawn Whitby and Pickering Railway. These entrepreneurs set their sights on transporting sandstone, ironstone, and whinstone from the Grosmont area to a stone dock at Boghall, Whitby, with export destinations including London, Margate, Ramsgate, and Tangier. G. W. Waddington was one of the founding fathers and is now laid to rest in the Grosmont churchyard. What makes this rail line truly remarkable is its unique plateway design, a departure from the standard bridge rail typically used at the time. The company's name is proudly emblazoned on the underside of the rail, a testament to their ingenuity and craftsmanship.
