The Whisper foil catamaran uses "wands" as ride height sensors to dynamically control foil lift. Parts of this wand system break from time to time, making it convenient to print them yourself. To produce an entire wand, you will need: a carbon rod (CFK) 8mm in diameter and 1m long (cut to 830mm length). Three-dimensional print the paddle (lower end) and arm (top part of wand). You'll also need two stainless screws (3mm x 10mm or longer), which can be clipped to the proper length. For printing, use a material stronger than PLA, such as ASA. Additional replacement parts for the wand system include: the lever inside the foil ride height mechanism. Updates: August 26, 2018: The wand arm has been updated to mount the rod screw from the side. Post-Printing Finishing the Parts Wand Arm: Use an 8mm drill to create a snug fit of the rod into the three-dimensional printed parts. Drill a 5mm hole for the shock cord that pulls the arm back. Drill a 4mm hole for the hinge and 2.5mm holes for the metal connector, cutting a M3 3mm metric thread into it. Drill a 2.5mm hole into the carbon rod for the 3mm screw (using a HSS-cobalt drill). Clip the screw to a length so it just doesn't stand out on the other side of the arm. Wand Paddle: Use an 8mm drill to create a snug fit of the rod into the three-dimensional printed parts. Drill a 2.5mm hole for the 3mm screw (using a HSS-cobalt drill). Clip the screw to a length so it just doesn't stand out on the other side of the paddle. Wand Rod: The total length of the original wand, including arm and paddle, is 930mm. Cut the carbon rod to 830mm. Wand Ride Height Lever: Drill 2.5mm holes for the 3mm screws (using a HSS-cobalt drill). Drill 2.5mm holes for the connecting rod. Cut M3 3mm metric thread into it, using only two of three cutting tools to ensure a tight fit. A tiny bit of glue helps lock the screws in place, preventing accidental opening.
