This is the egg case for a familiar marine gastropod known as whelk, which belongs to the Buccinidae family. There are three species of whelk in Rhode Island: channeled whelk (Busycotypus canaliculatus), knobbed whelk (Busycon carica), and lightning whelk (Busycon sinistrum).
