Humpback Whale Vertebral Plate Discovered on Barbados Shore. In 1867, whaling operations began along the coast of Barbados, with a primary focus on hunting humpback whales. These majestic creatures would regularly venture into the waters off Barbados at the start of each year as they made their way from the frigid Northern Atlantic to warmer Southern climates to mate and give birth. The vertebral plate found here is from a humpback whale caught in the early 1900s.
