The Westland Whirlwind was known by nicknames like "Whirly" or "Whirlibomber" among pilots of the Royal Air Force, a reference to its twin engines and fearsome firepower. As the RAF's first single-seat fighter armed with multiple cannons, the Whirlwind competed with iconic models like the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane. At one point in the late 1930s, the Westland Whirlwind was arguably the fastest plane to hit British skies, far outpacing any comparable model due to its powerful engines. Meanwhile, numerous setbacks delayed completion of the aircraft project as problems with the Rolls-Royce Peregrine engine led to extended periods of construction downtime. Ultimately, very few planes were completed and just a handful made it into active service by 1943. The RAF's efforts in the war also resulted in only two entire squadrons equipped with the Westland Whirlwind model, making its performance as an aerial support aircraft impressive if somewhat brief in scope.
