The Westertoren, a famous Amsterdam landmark, was constructed after the 1578 Alteration that resulted in seven Roman Catholic churches falling under Reformed Church control. This period saw Amsterdam's population soar from 30,000 to 200,000 as people migrated and refugees arrived. To accommodate this growth, suburbs like the Jordaan were established, and two churches - Noorderkerk and Westerkerk - were built. The latter, situated near the Prinsengracht canal, had a churchyard designed by Hendrick de Keyser. Although an original gate no longer exists, a second one on the Prinsengracht side provides access to the Prinsenhuis, used for church events and social activities. Inside the Westerkerk, tombstones serve as evidence of burials that once occurred within the church until 1865.
