A close-up of the western side of Holden Crater is captured by the HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in a stunning image that showcases the rugged terrain of the Red Planet. Print Settings: * Printer Brand: Wanhao * Printer Model: Wanhao Duplicator i3 V2 * Rafts: No rafts were used for this print. * Supports: None were needed to hold up the model. * Resolution: The layer height is set at 0.1mm, allowing for a highly detailed print. * Infill Density: The infill density is set at 15%, providing a good balance between weight and detail. Notes: * This print has six top layers to ensure a smooth finish. Post-Printing: After printing, any holes in the model were filled to create a solid surface. Then, acrylics and inks were used to paint the model, matching the colors visible in the HiRISE color pictures of the region. The colors have been enhanced for artistic effect, but real colors can be seen in this image. Design Process: The DTM (digital terrain model) image was opened in Blender following the instructions provided here. An interesting segment was selected and a 19 x 19cm area was cropped, which equals 3 x 3km of terrain at this resolution. The model is scaled 200% in the vertical axis to make the sand dune ripples visible when printed at 0.1mm layer height. If you want to print it at real scale, reduce the vertical scale to 50%.
