Due to his unappealing appearance and the fact that he's extremely ugly, he carries a certificate signed by the Patrician, verifying on the testimony of his parents and the midwife who delivered him that he is probably a human being. A recurring joke revolves around the inability of others to believe this, often due to or even because of the evidence presented. In fact, Nobby was once disqualified from the human race for shoving. He consistently has a cigarette butt nearby, typically stashed behind his ear.\r\nNobby was once mistakenly believed to be the Earl of Ankh, but it turned out to be a ruse designed to make him king as he would be easier to manipulate than the 'real' heir, Captain Carrot. Nobby may indeed be a genuine nobleman due to the abundance of family heirlooms he's kept hidden from everyone else.
