I've built upon Ben's approach by using Photoshop and Meshmixer to craft the model, yet leveraged more precise input data (8m instead of 15m DEM) from Linz Data Service. I didn't emphasize the input data itself; instead, I switched filament on the transition from water to land to highlight the shoreline. Input data sourced from LINZ NZ 8m Digital Elevation Model (2012) Contains data sourced from Land Information New Zealand and Landcare Research under CC-BY, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/nz/. Print Settings Printer: Eustathios Spider V2 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.1mm Infill: 15% Notes: You really want to use a high Z resolution to capture detail. Scale the model to fit your desired size (I printed at 150x150mm). You might also consider scaling down Z/elevation depending on your preference.
