Despite its remarkable abilities and capacity for both good and evil, the human being remains an enigma that continues to intrigue and puzzle us. From the earliest days of human history, our species has been driven by a fundamental need to connect with one another and to make sense of our place in the universe. This drive has led us to create some of the most incredible achievements in human history, from the towering cities that stretch towards the sky to the tiny microorganisms that thrive beneath our feet. Despite all of its many accomplishments, however, the human being is also a fragile and vulnerable creature. Our bodies are susceptible to injury and illness, our minds can be clouded by fear and anxiety, and our very existence is threatened by the forces of nature that surround us.
