This ornate object showcases exceptional craftsmanship in its flamboyant virtuoso carving. Its sides display a shield adorned with the Contarini family's coat of arms, Justice wielding a sword, a cherub resting against a tree trunk, and Fortitude holding a crown. Bartolomeo Buon had previously worked for Marino Contarini, a wealthy merchant who commissioned his sumptuous palace, the Ca’ d’Oro. This square well-head is carved from vibrant orange-red Verona marble. The outer edge of the pediment features intricate rope-work and diamond patterns. The four faces depict: A) Justice, crowned and holding a sword; B) a cherub resting against a tree trunk; C) Fortitude, crowned and holding a small column; D) a tournament shield decorated with a foliated roundel bearing the Contarini family's coat of arms. Gallery location: Medieval & Renaissance Room 50a, The Paul and Jill Ruddock Gallery, case EXPCourtesy of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London
