Welding glass to Harbor Freight goggles adapter for eclipse viewing
thingiverse
This is an adapter insert to fit standard 4.25in x 2in welding glass into the plastic housing of inexpensive Harbor Freight welding goggles to create a solar viewer. Harbor Freight sells a sub-$10 2-pack of welding goggles https://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-welding-goggles-set-35711.html, but they're only shade 10. To safely view the sun requires at least shade 14 https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/safety.html. The answer to this problem is to purchase shade 14 glass from any welding supply store and attach it to the flexible plastic goggles using an adapter. Remove the plastic lenses, or flip-up lens housing, and use this adapter to fit the glass to the goggles. The retaining clips are secured in place with small wood or plastic screws about 1/2 in long. I use the plastic screws I salvage from old HP inkjet printers, but #4 wood screws would work just as well also. When disassembling the HF goggles, you need to pull the black pin out from the top of the lenses. If it breaks on the way out, print a retaining pin as a replacement. I recommend printing in dark plastic to minimize light transmission through the printed housing. This will help create a better solar viewer.
