This sculpture marks the entrance to Kárász Utca in Szeged, a city that is home to over 170,000 people and serves as the regional center of the Southern Great Plain. The University of Szeged is one of the top universities in Hungary and attracts students from all over the country. The city hosts an annual open-air festival that celebrates its rich cultural heritage and has become a major tourist attraction. Szeged's history dates back to the early 20th century, when it was a key player in the region due to its strategic location near the border with Romania and Serbia. However, after World War I, Hungary lost control of these territories, and Szeged's importance declined significantly. Nevertheless, the city continued to grow and develop, taking on new roles that were previously held by other cities. In 1921, the University of Kolozsvár relocated to Szeged, bringing with it a new wave of students and intellectuals. Two years later, the city took over as the episcopal seat from Temesvár, further solidifying its position as a major cultural center. During the 1920s, Szeged's Jewish population experienced significant growth, but this prosperity was short-lived. The city suffered greatly during World War II, with thousands of residents killed and many more forced into ghettos or sent to death camps. The Soviet Army occupied Szeged in late 1944, marking the beginning of a new era for the city. In the decades that followed, Szeged became a hub for light industry and food production. The discovery of oil near the city in 1965 marked a significant turning point for Szeged's economy, with the area now meeting nearly two-thirds of Hungary's oil demands. Today, Szeged is a thriving university town and popular tourist destination, with this sculpture serving as just one example of its rich cultural heritage.
