Andrea Pisano (Pontedera 1290 – 1348 Orvieto) is a legendary Italian sculptor and architect, also known as Andrea da Pontedera. While residing in Florence, Andrea Pisano produced numerous pivotal works of marble sculpture that unmistakably reveal Giotto's profound influence. By the year 1340 he had succeeded Giotto as Master of the Works of Florence Cathedral, where he created a remarkable series of reliefs possibly designed by his revered teacher. Among these reliefs are the double band of panel-reliefs which Pisano skillfully executed for the majestic campanile. The subjects of these are the Four Great Prophets, the Seven Virtues, the Seven Sacraments, the Seven Works of Mercy and the Seven Planets. The duomo proudly showcases the chief of Pisano's other notable Florentine works in marble. In 1347 he assumed the role of Master of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral, which had already been conceived and initiated by Lorenzo Maitani. These and the previously mentioned doors are Pisano's only known masterpieces. Andrea Pisano played a pivotal part in liberating modern art from Byzantine influence. His remarkable life came to an end in 1348.
