The WDM-2 is the workhorse that powered the Indian Railways(IR) to what it is today and set the standard for all diesel locomotives for more than four decades. It was rugged, very reliable, powerful enough with simple construction and mechanics, was easy to operate and maintain, was very malleable, thus enabling engineers to tweak and tinker with the engine to produce different versions of it. The seemingly indestructible ALCO engine in its various forms is going strong even today after ruling the Indian Diesel scene singlehandedly for 37 years!
