Really? You know the Waterman Projection? Have you seen the 1909 Cahill map it's based on - One with a framed reproduction hanging on your wall?! Well, I have a 3D printed model of it at home. Inspired by Randall Munroe's xkcd "What Your Favorite Map Projection Says About You" webcomic, which you can find here: http://xkcd.com/977/ I thank Randall for introducing me to the Waterman Butterfly Projection - It really is something else! More information on this amazing projection of our world can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterman_butterfly_projection Unfortunately, my 3D printed version cannot be folded back into a globe... yet! Here's how I designed it: The idea was to create different colors at each of the three layers. The details on this piece are: B_ButterflyMap.stl Size: ~200mm x 120mm x 4mm If you need to change colors, simply pause your printer at: 1.5mm Z height to switch to the second color 2.9mm Z height to switch to the third color This is the gcode used to print the piece: WeeksB_ButterflyMap.gcode Requires Sailfish firmware - created with Simplify3D Layer settings: Layer height: 0.1 Left Extruder temperature: 200?C Number of shells: 3 Infill percentage: 20% Pause at: * Layer 15 / Z 1.5mm (second color) * Layer 29 / Z 2.9mm (third color) Total print time: approximately 3 hours. For those using a MakerBot (or its offshoots) running Sailfish, I have an x3g file that's just for you: WeeksB_ButterflyMap.x3g If you've got a huge printer, feel free to use this larger model: WeeksB_ButterflyMap-ExLarge.stl Size: ~900mm x 550mm x 15mm And here's the Solidworks part file used to create the .STLs: WeeksB_ButterflyMap.SLDPRT
