A water wheel harnesses water's energy to generate useful power, often in watermills. The wheel, made of wood or metal, has blades or buckets on its outer rim that serve as the driving surface. Typically, the wheel is mounted vertically on a horizontal axle; however, it can also be placed horizontally on a vertical shaft, like in tub or Norse water wheels. Vertical wheels transmit power through either the axle or via a ring gear and driving belts/ gears, while horizontal wheels directly drive their loads.
