Water is the essential chemical substance that makes up a whopping 71% of our planet's surface, covering vast expanses of seas and oceans. It is also the primary component of rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water on Earth, not to mention being a crucial element in most living organisms' bodily fluids. The unique formula H2O defines each molecule, comprised of one oxygen atom bonded with two hydrogen atoms through strong covalent connections. In its liquid state, this mixture takes the name water at standard ambient temperatures and atmospheric pressures, allowing it to take on various forms as precipitation, fog, snow, or even the gas form of steam or vapor. It cycles endlessly through evaporation, transpiration (also known as evapotranspiration), condensation, runoff, and more frequently than not makes its way back into our seas. Approximately 70% of freshwater consumed by humans is allocated for agriculture purposes alone; an astonishing statistic that underscores water's profound impact on the world economy. Boats traversing rivers, lakes, canals, and oceans facilitate a significant portion of long-distance trade in commodities such as oil and natural gas, as well as manufactured goods. Industrial processes also heavily rely on water due to its solubility properties, while it plays an integral part in domestic heating and cooling systems. In addition, its use extends to entertainment activities like swimming, pleasure boating, surfing, sport fishing, diving, among many others, demonstrating the omnipresent role of water in shaping leisure activities globally. Moreover, a vast array of substances dissolved in or suspended by natural waters determines their color appearance, a fact evident when contemplating the transparent nature of pure water. Water vapour acts invisibly as a gas under typical conditions due to its inability to be visibly seen without interacting with its surroundings. Light within our visible electromagnetic spectrum travels unaltered for approximately 2 meters through either ice or clean water, giving aquatic plants and certain organisms living hundreds of meters below sea level their unique environment in which to photosynthesise. Through greater thicknesses, a striking greenish-blue color becomes visible. In water's solid form known as ice, its colour appearance remains unchanged even under much thinner depths of just ten meters or so, the result is more clearly a turquoise blue appearance as it moves into progressively deeper areas. Water displays high transparency to wavelengths ranging between red and violet portions on our standard spectrum however absorption levels are higher when transitioning towards lower wavelength segments like ultraviolet light which demonstrates intense absorption characteristics in this specific context. Water possesses significant physical properties that enable efficient transmission of energy from its surface down towards depths, acting as the Earth's thermal moderator, playing a critical protective function through controlling temperatures across regions. Because of water's polar properties each molecule can form strong hydrogen bonds, responsible for high capillary action forces; facilitating the rise of plants along these fine structures and forming tree-like vessels within plant cells which serve crucial purposes during vascular activity throughout plant bodies.
