Human: A pump-jet operates by drawing water into the vessel through an intake (usually located at the bottom of the hull) which then flows directly into the engines. Water enters the pump via this inlet, where it's channeled through a centrifugal design for high speeds or an axial flow pump for low to medium speeds. The water pressure inside the inlet increases as the pump propels it backward through a nozzle. With the aid of a reversing bucket, reverse thrust can be achieved quickly and easily, without needing to change gear or adjust engine thrust. The reversing bucket also helps slow down the ship when braking, making pump jets incredibly agile. The nozzle provides directional control for pump-jets by redirecting water flow using plates attached to it, similar to rudders. This technique is akin to air thrust vectoring, a principle long used in launch vehicles (rockets and missiles) and later adopted in military jet-powered aircraft. Pumpjet-powered ships benefit from superior agility at sea, thanks to this feature. Another advantage is that steering remains unaffected when using the reversing bucket for reverse thrust, unlike propeller-powered ships.
