Water bottle
sketchfab
This wooden water bottle, crafted from wood and bearing the distinctive 'Oliver' pattern of 1875, was a design that fell short in several critical areas. When left empty, it would dry out and eventually crack, causing leaks whenever it was filled with water. On the other hand, if stored filled with water, bacteria would rapidly multiply, rendering the water undrinkable. Private Panton, a soldier serving with the 2nd Battalion DCLI during the Egyptian War of 1882, used this very bottle at the Battle of Kassassin. Unfortunately, we know little about Private Panton's fate but can surmise that he likely suffered from thirst when his water bottle was pierced by a bullet.
