In contaminated water collection, the cap is removed before screwing it back on with a suitable filter inserted. The filtered water can be safely used. This design could benefit communities lacking clean water access or decontamination services. Made of PLA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polylactic_acid), it initially supported activated carbon filters due to their wide availability and cost-effectiveness. Activated Carbon filters most contaminants and many volatile organic compounds but not dissolved inorganic molecules, so other filters are recommended for areas with high levels of these pollutants (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_filtering).
