The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells and organs. It beats around 100,000 times per day, pumping approximately five quarts of blood throughout the body. The heart is divided into four chambers: the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. The atria receive blood returning to the heart through veins, while the ventricles pump blood out to the body through arteries. A network of valves ensures that blood flows in one direction only, preventing backflow and ensuring efficient circulation. During each heartbeat, the heart muscle contracts and relaxes in a coordinated manner, allowing for the continuous flow of blood throughout the body. This complex process is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which regulates heart rate and rhythm in response to changing physiological conditions. In addition to its role in circulating blood, the heart also plays a crucial part in maintaining overall health and well-being. Abnormal heart rhythms or other cardiovascular issues can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
