Wastewaters consist of waterborne solids and liquids dumped into sewers, serving as the wastewater footprint of community life. In composition, wastewater encompasses dissolved and suspended organic solids, described as "putrescible" or biologically decomposable. Domestic wastewater harbors an immense number of living organisms - bacteria and other microorganisms whose activities drive the decomposition process. When decay unfolds under anaerobic conditions, that is, in the absence of dissolved oxygen within the wastewater, unpleasant consequences arise, producing odors and unappealing appearances. In contrast, when decay occurs under aerobic conditions, that is, in the presence of dissolved oxygen, unpleasant effects are averted and the treatment process is significantly expedited.
