Washington, officially known as the State of Washington, is a state located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Named after George Washington, the first president of the U.S., this state was formed from the western part of Washington Territory, which Britain ceded in 1846 according to the terms of the Oregon Treaty that resolved the Oregon boundary dispute. Covering an area of 71,362 sq miles (184,827 km2), Washington ranks as the 18th largest state and is the 13th most populous with over 7.4 million people.
