Miltiades, a prominent Athenian citizen, is immortalized in this ancient-style bust, renowned for his pivotal role in the Battle of Marathon and its aftermath. He was the son of Cimon Coalemos, a celebrated Olympic chariot-racer, and the father of Cimon, a distinguished Athenian statesman. Miltiades' fame extends to the 'Helmet of Miltiades', a rare bronze helmet unearthed during excavations at the temple of Zeus in Olympia. Bearing his signature, likely inscribed by himself, this remarkable artifact was dedicated to Zeus as an expression of gratitude for a victorious battle. This unique relic can be found in The Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Crafted from original casts and marble components, this bust is believed to have been reconstituted into a herm, utilizing material sourced from The SMK (KAS640) and the Antikensammlungen and Glyptothek in Germany.
